Background: In a small suburb house in Djakarta, a young Indonesian mother-to-be is receiving scores of visitors, including several government ministers. In her womb she claims to carry an unborn baby, conceived as long as eighteen months ago, who regularly quotes the Koran and answers visitors' questions in any language.
However, during a filming session with a Visnews cameraman on Tuesday (15 September), only quotes from the Koran and a crying sound appeared to come from the baby's stomach.
Many local newspapers have carried stories on the phenomenon, and President Suharto who has seen the mother, is among the many people baffled by it. The baby apparently refuses to answer any questions, in any language, until its mother has had a second audience with President Suharto.
The mother, Mrs. Zaharahfonna, said the baby had told her it would be born in Mecca, the Moslem holy city in Saudi Arabia, after two years. She said she received the baby "at the will of God" and implicitly obeys its instructions.
Mrs. Zaharahfonna and her husband plan to travel to West Germany on October 10 for an examination of "mother and baby" by specialists - on the orders of the baby.
Doctors in Pakistan, West Germany, Japan and Malaysia had so far been unable to explain the phenomenon. Mrs. Zaharahfonna showed the journalists two ex-ray photographs which she said were taken in Pakistan five months and thirteen months after conception.
SYNOPSIS: A young Indonesian woman claims to carry in her womb a baby that is already nine months overdue. She also claims that the baby quotes the Koran and speaks all languages.
The mother, Mrs. Zaharahfonna, 23 years old, said she received the baby "at the will of God" and implicitly obeyed all its instructions. In October she and her husband are travelling to West Germany for an examination of "mother and child" by specialists - on the orders of the baby.
The mother said the baby told her it would be born in Mecca, the Moslem city in Saudi Arabia, two years after conception.
Doctors in Pakistan, West Germany, Japan and Malaysia have already been baffled by the phenomenon. President Suharto is among the many people baffled after meeting the mother. He is maintaining a respectful silence.
