  • Description

THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL MET EMERGENCY SESSION TONIGHT (FRIDAY) TO DISCUSS THE CYPRUS SITUATION. SECRETARY-GENERAL U THANT SAID THERE WERE INDICATIONS THAT GREECE AND TURKEY WERE "ON THE BRINK OF WAR".

TURKEY WARNED IT HAD DECIDED TO "SOLVE THE CYPRUS PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL" - BUT OBSERVERS BELIEVED THAT TURKEY WOULD WAIT FOR 48 HOURS TO GIVE PEACEMAKERS A CHANGE TO FIND A SETTLEMENT. THIS FOLLOWED TURKISH ACCEPTANCE OF A NATO PROPOSAL THAT SECRETARY-GENERAL MANLIO BROSIO USE HIS GOOD OFFICES TO HELP NEGOTIATE A SETTLEMENT WITH ATHENS AND NICOSIA.

IN CYPRUS ITSELF, WHERE GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS FACED EACH OTHER ACROSS BARRICADES, PRESIDENT MAKARIOS ISSUED A PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR PEACE. HE TOLD A CYPRUS RADIO AUDIENCE - "WE HATE WAR".

MEANWHILE TWO TURKISH ARMY CORPS STOOD POISED ON TURKEY'S SOUTHERN COAST READY FOR A POSSIBLE INVASION OF CYPRUS, AND GREECE'S ARMED FORCES WERE ON MAXIMUM ALERT. IN VILLAGES AND TOWNS THROUGHOUT TURKEY CROWDS CHANTED FOR WAR WITH GREECE.

THE NATO PEACEMAKER, SIGNER BROSIO, LEFT TONIGHT FOR ATHENS AND ANKARA. ALREADY WORKING FOR A STAY IN THE ONIMOUS SITUATION WERE U THANT'S REPRESENTATIVE, DR. JOSE ROLZ-BENNETT, AND PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S SPECIAL ENVOY CYPRUS VANCE. BOTH HE VISITED THE GREEK TURKISH CAPITALS HOLDING URGENT TALKS WITH BOTH GOVERNMENTS.
