  • Description

Fifteen men, armed with machine guns and petrol bombs, attacked and destroyed a police station of Kokkinotrimithia, Cyprus on Tuesday night.

The armed group dragged out four policemen on duty and gutted the building, withdrawing as police reinforcements arrived. No casualties were reported.

In nearby Evrykhou, at almost the same time, there was a 10-minute exchange of fire between local police officers and a similar group of raiders.

The raids were the latest in a series of actions officially attributed to supporters of General George Grivas who seek to have Cyprus united with Greece. At the weekend, 21 bombs exploded on open sites throughout the island as the 15th anniversary of the EOKA guerrilla uprising was observed. The uprising, led by General Grivas, brought the end of British rule on the island.
