  • Description

BRITON JACKIE STEWART TOOK AN IRON GRIP ON THE 1969 WORLD MOTOR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A BRILLIANT VICTORY IN THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX AT SILVERSTONE TODAY (SATURDAY). IT WAS THE 30-YEAR-OLD SCOT'S FIFTH GRAND PRIX WIN IN SIX RACES THIS SEASON AND WITH FIVE EVENTS TO GO HE IS VIRTUALLY CERTAIN OF TAKING THE TITLE.

TODAY'S RACE, HELD IN PERFECT CONDITIONS, WAS RUN AT A FANTASTIC SPEED WHICH RAISED THE LAP RECORD TO 129.61 MILES PER HOUR (208.586 KPH) SET BY STEWART IN HIS BLUE FRENCH MATRA.

THE PACE WAS SO HOT THAT DRIVERS FOUND THEMSELVES RUNNING OUT OF PETROL BEFORE THE END AND THIS ALMOST SPELT DISASTER FOR BELGIAN JACKIE ICKX. WITH HIS ENGINE STUTTERING AND OCCASIONALLY CUTTING OUT ALTOGETHER HE COASTED OVER THE LINE IN SECOND PLACE.

DASHING AUSTRIAN JOCHEN RINDT, AT THE WHEEL OF A WORKS LOTUS, CHALLENGED STEWART FOR MUCH OF THE 245.96 MILE (395.83 KM) RACE BUT AFTER A PIT STOP HE WAS NEVER ABLE AGAIN TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE LONG-HAIRED SCOT, AND FINISHED FOURTH.

STEWART'S AVERAGE SPEED OF 127.25 MPH (204.788 KPH) WAS ALMOST FOUR MILES AN HOUR (6.4 KPH) FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS RECORD AND 10 MPH (16.09 KPH) FASTER THAN THE SPEED AT WHICH THE LATE JIM CLARK WON THE RACE THE LAST TIME IT WAS HELD AT SILVERSTONE IN 1967.

THIRD PLACE WENT TO NEW ZEALAND BRUCE MCLAREN WHO IS NOW SECOND IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS.
