    Six Arab oil states have formed a political and economic alliance to be known as the Gulf C-operation Council.

    Rulers of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain met in Abu Dhabi to inaugurate the council on 25 May. The new agreement is designed to bring the Gulf states closer together on such issues as defence, oil and economic development.
