  • Description

In Japan, relief operations are underway after Typhoon Tip swept across the mainland, causing widespread devastation. At least 33 people are known to have been killed, while an estimated eleven thousand are homeless.

SYNOPSIS: Typhoon Tip brought traffic in Tokyo to a virtual standstill and temporarily stranded millions of people as it raged northwards. Four people were killed in the Japanese capital - one of them after being hit by a falling shop sign at busy intersection. Winds of up to 80 miles an hour 125 kilometres an hour) uprooted trees, smashed houses and destroyed bridges. The typhoon set off several landslides which caused further damage to property.

The gusts were strong enough to overturn cars -- many of them abandoned by their owners when the storm struck.

Snapped electricity cables -- some of them live -- posed another hazard. Tokyo's two main airports were closed down and international flights were diverted to airports in Southern Japan. Heavy seas off the northern island of Hokkaido grounded a Chinese freighter, which then broke in two. Two Japanese helicopters -- shutting through strong winds -- rescued all 47 Chinese crew members from the eight thousand ton vessel.

Others were not so lucky. Forty-four seamen were reported to be either dead or missing. Among the missing were 33 crew members from a South Korean Fishing boat which sank off Eastern Hokkaido.

Here, at Harumi Pier on the outskirts of Tokyo, water rose at least two metres (more than six feet), flooding nearby roads. One man was repairing the roof of his home when Typhoon Tip struck. The powerful winds blew him off his house, dashing him to the ground below and killing him instantly. Crop damage was severe -- particularly in northern parts of Japan.
