  • Description

A FLEET OF 300 ARMY LORRIES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) FERRIED EARLY COMMUTERS FROM OUTLYING DISTRICTS OF PARIS AS FRENCH STATE EMPLOYEES BEGAN A SERIES OF 24-HOUR NATION-WIDE STRIKES THROWING TRANSPORT AND OTHER PUBLIC SERVICES INTO NEAR PARALYSIS.

THE STRIKES ARE BEING STAGED IN PROTEST AGAINST A GOVERNMENT HOLD-DOWN ON WAGES.

THE PARIS METRO (UNDERGROUND) WAS IDLE SAVE FOR AN EARLY MORNING SKELETON SERVICE OF TRAINS. THESE WERE LATER AFFECTED BY POWER CUTS WHEN ELECTRICITY WORKERS JOINED THE STRIKE LATER IN THE MORNING.

THERE WERE NO CITY BUS SERVICES AND MANY PARISIANS DROVE THEIR CARS INTO TOWN, CAUSING TRAFFIC JAMS.

MAINLINE RAIL SERVICES WERE HEAVILY REDUCED -- ONLY 47 TRAINS LEFT PARIS, COMPARED WITH A NORMAL 300 DAILY. OFFICIALS WARNED THERE WOULD BE ONE TO THREE HOURS DELAY.

POLICE WERE GUARDING BUILDINGS OF THE GAS AND ELECTRICITY BOARD, ALLOWING ONLY AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL INSIDE.

MINERS WERE ALSO ON STRIKE, AND WORKERS IN SOME PRIVATE INDUSTRIES -- WERE STAGING STOPPAGES OF VARYING DURATION.

UNION OFFICIALS SAID THE TOTAL NUMBER OF WORKERS ON STRIKE COULD BE S HIGH AS SIX MILLION -- THREE MILLION IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE AND THREE IN PRIVATE INDUSTRY.
