    The new Gabon Ambassador to the Ivory Coast presented his credentials to President Houphouet-Boigny at a ceremony in the Presidential Place in Abidjan on Monday (September 20). In an exchange of messages before the presentation, both men agreed on the need for dialogue with South Africa. This, they said, was the only possible solution to the problem of apartheid--violence would not solve it.

    SYNOPSIS: The new Gabon Ambassador to the Ivory Coast presented his credentials to President Felix Houphouet-Boigny at a ceremony in the Presidential Palace on Monday.

    He is Monsieur Jose Amiar, who was greeted upon his arrival by the President.

    In a message to the President at the gathering, which included ministers and other foreign ambassadors, Monsieur Amiar spoke of the close ties between the two countries and their joint battle against under-development in Africa. On South Africa, he said the only solution to the problem of apartheid there was a dialogue with the South African Government.

    Replying, President Houphouet-Boigny said he agreed with the Ambassador on the issue of dialogue with South Africa. It was the only answer, he said, and those African countries who spoke of using violence against the white minority government there would not solve the problem. On under-development in Africa, he assured the new Ambassador that his country would continue with Gabon in the fight against poverty.
