  • Description

Celebrations marking the 16th anniversary of independence in the African state of Ivory Coast have included several major sporting events, not the least of which was the Abinader Grand Prix for cyclist.

SYNOPSIS: The race was run on Sunday (12 December). Four cycling clubs entered 42 competitors in the race which was sponsored by the abinader confectionary firm. The Managing Director of the firm, Mr. Roger Abinader started the race.

The race was run in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan around a six kilometres circuit (3 4/3 miles). The entrants had to complete 15 laps of the circuit making it a 90 kilometres race (56 1/4 miles).

The four clubs taking part were Sporting Association ABNETD, wearing gray colours; ASEECI, wearing red; ASRAN wearing green and UCB, yellow. An added interest to the race was the new rivalry between the older clubs ASEECI and ASRAN, and the new clubs ABNETD and UCB. The first major race of the season had been won by Lambert Kafando of the ABNET club and it was thought the older clubs would be making a special effort in this event.

Excitement was high as the winner came into view. The old clubs had missed out again for it was Lambert Kafando of BNETD, number five, who took the honours, and the trophy from Mr. Roger Abinader.
