  • Description

PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA ON SUNDAY ATTENDED THE CLOSING SESSION OF A THREE-DAY PARTY CONVENTION OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (KANU). THE SESSION WAS INVOLVED WITH THE ELECTION OF EIGHT VICE-PRESIDENTS. THE CONFERENCE WAS MARKED BY THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE POSITION OF VICE-PRESIDENT OGINDA ODINGA. HE WALKED OUT OF THE FINAL SESSION IN PROTEST AGAINST THE IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION OF AMENDMENTS TO THE PARTY'S CONSTITUTION - WHICH INCLUDE THE ABOLITION OF HIS POST AS DEPUTY PRESIDENT. LAST WEEK, MR ODINGA WAS ASKED TO RESIGN AS VICE-PRESIDENT BY 99 OF THE COUNTRY'S 170 PARLIAMENTARIANS.

THE NEW CONSTITUTION APPROVED BY THE PARTY PROVIDES FOR THE ELECTION OF EIGHT REGIONAL VICE-PRESIDENTS TO REPLACE THE DEPUTY PRESIDENT. THE EIGHT ELECTED INCLUDE THE FINANCE MINISTER, MR JAMES GICHURI; THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER, MR LAURENCE SAGINI; THE HOME MINISTER, MR DANIEL ARAP MOI AND THE FORMER LEADER OF THE DISSOLVED OPPOSITION, MR RONALD NGALA.

MR ODINGA TOLD THE CONVENTION THAT HE DID NOT AGREE WITH THE AMENDMENTS AS THEY HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN DISCUSSED. HE SUGGESTED THAT THE APPLICATION OF THE NEW CONSTITUTION BE DEFERRED TO ALLOW FOR FULL DISCUSSION. PRESIDENT KENYATTA, IN REPLY, SAID THAT A POSTPONEMENT WOULD DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE.
