    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE OF TANZANIA, CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST AFRICA, CONFERRED DEGREES ON STUDENTS AT NAIROBI YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). MR. JOMO KENYATTA, PRIME MINISTER OF KENYA, AND MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL, TOOK PART IN THE PROCEEDINGS.

    THIRTY OF THE FORTY-TWO DEGREES CONFERRED WENT TO UNDERGRADUATES SPECIALISING IN VETERINARY SCIENCE. A FURTHER ELEVEN RECEIVED MEDICAL DEGREES, WHILE A MASTER'S DEGREE WENT TO ONE STUDENT FOR HIS WORK IN MATHEMATICS.

    LAST YEAR, IN HIS SPEECH ACCEPTING THE CHANCELLORSHIP, RESIDENT NYERERE REFERRED TO MEMBERS OF THE UNIVERSITY AS "THE TORCH-BEARERS OF OUR SOCIETY AND THE PROTECTORS OF THE FLAME, SHOULD WE, IN OUR URGENCY, ENDANGER ITS BRIGHTNESS." HE ADDED THAT THE UNIVERSITY SHOULD NOT BE AN ISLAND "FILLED WITH PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN A WORLD OF THEIR OWN, LOOKING ON WITH ACADEMIC OBJECTIVITY OR INDIFFERENCE AT THE ACTIVITIES OF THOSE OUTSIDE". INSTEAD, THE CHANCELLOR SAID, THE UNIVERSITY SHOULD TAKE AN ACTIVE PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF EAST AFRICA.
