Background: Twenty-five countries participated in the Eighth International Pacific Fair, which opened in Peru's capital, Lima, on November 18th. The emphasis was on heavy industrial equipment; virtually no consumer goods were exhibited.

An estimated 800,000 people crowded the fair, despite the absence of "luxury goods" by official order. Due to an effort by government departments and the National Bank to reduce the red tape usually connected with foreign purchases and importation, nearly everything exhibited at the fair was sold.

Fair organisers claimed that about 20 million dollars (GBP 8.3 million sterling) worth of goods had been sold, chiefly machines that had been exhibited in the pavilions of various countries. Most of the Western nations had pavilions, as well as the South and Central American countries. Japan, India, Soviet Union and several other Eastern countries also participated.
