Cevart was killed while practising for the United States Grand Prix -- the race that would have been Stewart's one-hundredth Grand Prix. But he withdrew.

Stewart -- who's 34 -- said he made the decision to retire in April this year, because of his family, As the world's best-known, and probably its richest racing driver, Stewart will work in future as a consultant to Ford of Europe on special projects and production development.

He will also continue his crusade for greater safety in motor racing.
