PRESIDENT JOHNSON YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) LED AMERICANS IN A DAY OF NATIONAL PRAYER FOR RACIAL PEACE. THE DAY OF PRAYER CAME AT THE END OF A WEEK OF THE WORST RACE RIOTS IN THE NATION'S HISTORY.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON AND HIS FAMILY OBSERVED THE DAY WITH A VISIT TO THE NATIONAL CITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN WASHINGTON.

IN DETROIT THE CITY'S MAYOR, JEROME P. CAVANAGH, WORSHIPPED IN THE CHURCH OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT. WHILE HE WAS INSIDE THE CHURCH, POLICE AND NATIONAL GUARDSMEN CONTINUED TO PATROL THE STREETS.

AS SUNDAY DAWNED THE DEATH TOLL IN DETROIT ROSE TO 41, WHEN A SOLDIER SHOT AND KILLED A NEGRO LOOTER. VIOLENCE IN 30 CITIES ACROSS THE NATION HAS LEFT 74 DEAD, THOUSANDS INJURED AND HOMELESS AND PROPERTY DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT 600 MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT 214 MILLION STERLING).

MR. JOHNSON, WITH MRS JOHNSON AND THEIR DAUGHTER LYNDA, SAT AMONG A PREDOMINANTLY WHITE CONGREGATION FOR THE CHURCH SERVICE YESTERDAY. THEY HEARD THE REVEREND GEORGE DAVIS CALL FOR MERCY FOR THE RIOTERS. HE ASKED RIOTERS, SNIPERS AND ARSONISTS TO REPENT, AND DECLARED THAT AMERICA WAS "BASICALLY SOUND".

"THOSE ABROAD WHO TRY TO EMBARRASS US WILL BE MEN AND NATIONS WHO DO NOT HAVE OUR FREEDOMS, WHO DO NOT HAVE OUR FREEDOM OF DISSENT, WHO ARE AFRAID TO WASH THEIR DIRTY LINEN IN PUBLIC," HE SAID.
