    The American community in Lebanon commemorated the massacre of one and a half million Armenians by Turkish troops in 1915-16 with a silent march through the streets of Beirut on Wednesday (24 April).

    Afterwards they gave donations of blood to the Beirut Red Cross as a mark of respect to Lebanon, their adopted country.

    In April, 1915, thousands of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders from Constantinople and the Turkish provinces were deported to the interior of Anatolia. Afterwards whole Armenian towns and villages were deported from Turkey with thousands perishing in the Syrian deserts.

    Almost two million Armenians were finally deported. Hundreds of thousand died at the hands of Turkish troops.
