  • Description

Mozambique Nationalist leader, Samora Machel said on Friday (7 June) he looked forward to "more fruitful" discussions with Portuguese officials next month on ways of ending the 10-year guerrilla war in the territory.

Senhor Machel, President of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), was commenting on the two-day meeting with a Portuguese team headed by Foreign Minister Mario Soares, which ended in Lusaka the previous day.

Senhor Machel said the meeting had created a climate of mutual confidence with the two sides agreeing in principle to meeting again in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, early in July.

After eight hours of discussions in the Zambian State House ballroom on Thursday (6 June) the two sides issued communique in which they "recognised that the establishment of a ceasefire depends on prior global agreement related to fundamental political principles". The wording of the communique was taken to refer to an earlier statement by Senhor Machel that "independence was the Mozambique people's inalienable right".

Meanwhile, Zambia's President Kenneth Kaunda, who helped bring the Portuguese and Frelimo representatives together, began informing his African colleagues about the talks in an intense diplomatic move to gain support for them.
