  • Description

IN THE FRENCH ELECTIONS IN DECEMBER, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WILL FACE FIVE OPPONENTS. SHOULD HE LOSE, AS HE SAYS IN HIS OWN WORDS: "NO ONE CAN DOUBT THAT THE REPUBLIC WILL COLLAPSE AT ONCE."
THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN IS NOW UNDER WAY. SUPPORTING THE PRESIDENT IS AN ORGANISATION CALLED THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION IN SUPPORT OF GENERAL DE GAULLE. THE OPERATION OF PRINTING AND DISTRIBUTING ITS CAMPAIGN POSTERS IS A TOUR-DE-FORCE -- NO ONE AT THE ASSOCIATION'S HEADQUARTERS KNEW TILL THE GENERAL'S TELEVISION BROADCAST TO THE NATION SIX DAYS AGO THAT HE WAS STANDING AGAIN. THE PRESIDENT WILL BE 75 ON MONDAY WEEK (NOVEMBER 22).

APPEARING AS THE STRONGEST RIVAL IS THE LEFTWING CANDIDATE M. FRANCOIS MITTERAND. HE HAS THE SUPPORT OF COMMUNISTS, SOCIALISTS AND LEFTWING RADICALS. LAWYER TIXIER-VIGANCOUR IS THE EXTREME RIGHTWING CANDIDATE. JEAN LECANUET, THE SO-CALLED 'CENTRE' CANDIDATE IS A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE CATHOLIC MRP PARTY. SENATOR PIERRE MARCHILHACY IS SEEN AS A MODERATE RIGHTWING LONE WOLF. THE OTHER CANDIDATE, PAUL ANTIER WAS MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE IN THE EARLY 1950s.

VOTING WILL BE BY UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE LOUIS NAPOLEON BONAPARTE WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT ON DECEMBER 10, 1848.
