In Thailand film stars earn their money. Most stars do their own stunt work, a top superstar might be working on 20 films at any one time, and the female lead in a musical would be expected to sing as many as 40 songs in the one film.
And in spite of the exorbitant interest rates charged for the money to finance a production with no help from the government, the Thai film industry is flourishing.
One of its stars, Sombath Meithanee, is 37 years old. He is one of the top stars in Thailand, who has been acting for 14 years and has starred in more than 300 films. He has been a director for the last 10 years and in this time has directed an average of five films a year.
At present he is directing "Gangsters" Paradise" with one of the country's leading actresses, Alanya Namborng. It is taking four months to complete at a cost of more than 2,00,000 baht (about GBP40,000 sterling).
Another film which will be shown on the country's 400 screens later this year is "The Last Love" produced, directed and filmed by U.S. - educated Prince Chatrachalerm Yukol.
About 80 films are started each year, and about 60 of these are completed. There are four production companies in the country but most of the films are made by independent producers and directors.
