  • Description

South Korea won their 17th Gold Medal in the Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, on Saturday (December 19) by winning the basketball competition. They beat the 1966 champions, Israel, by 81 points to 67.

Both sides went into the deciding match with four wins and one loss each. South Korea attacked from the outset and shot into the lead after three minutes. From then on the Israelis never got near them and were trailing 43 points to 31 at half time.

The Koreans showed great speed and tenacious direct play which more than matched the Israelis' height advantage. In the second half they went 20 points ahead of the struggling Israelis who could only counter with a late scoring burst.

However it was too late -- and at the final whistle the Koreans were 14 points clear. The Israelis had to be content with the silver medal.
