    THE FIRST CONCORDE SUPERSONIC AIRLINER HAS BEEN FLOWN - BUT IT IS ONLY A MODEL ONE TWENTIETH THE SIZE OF THE REAL AIRCRAFT NOW BEING BUILT IN BRITAIN AND FRANCE.

    THE MODEL HAS BEEN TEST FLOWN AT THE ROYAL AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHMENT NEAR BEDFORD.

    IT HAS BEEN COUPLED BENEATH A HELICOPTER FOR ITS FLIGHTS BUT IS CONTROLLED INDEPENDENTLY.

    THE MODEL LIFTS, ROLLS AND TURNS WHILE RECORDING INSTRUMENTS MEASURE ITS PERFORMANCE. THE MODEL HAS ALSO HAD A FEW MOMENTS OF FREE FLIGHT.

    THE ANGLO-FRENCH CONCORDE PROGRAMME HAS NOW REACHED THE STAGE WHERE THE FIRST AIRCRAFT ARE TAKING SHAPE AT WORKSHOPS IN BRITAIN AND FRANCE.

    THE FIRST PROTOTYPE, AVION 001, BEING BUILT IN TOULOUSE, IS EXPECTED TO MAKE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT IN MARCH 1968. THE SECOND PROTOTYPE, BEING PIECED TOGETHER AT FILTON, IN ENGLAND, IS SCHEDULED TO FLY A YEAR AFTER THE FRENCH PLANE. THE AIRCRAFT IS EXPECTED TO GO INTO REGULAR SERVICE IN 1971.

    THE MODEL CLOSELY RESEMBLES THE PLANE - A LOW-WING MONOPLANE WITH A SLENDER DELTA WING. THE CONCORDE IS BEING DESIGNED TO FLY AT MACH 2.2 (1,450 M.P.H. OR 2.150 KM.P.H.).

    THE CONCORDE PROJECT IS COSTING GBP380-MILLION STERLING. FOUR COMPANIES AND MORE THAN TWENTY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENTS IN BRITAIN AND FRANCE ARE COMBINING THEIR EFFORTS.

    EACH OF THE AIRCRAFT WILL COST IN THE REGION OF GBP5-MILLION.
