  • Description

IT WAS ANNOUNCED JULY 16 THAT THE 66,000-TONS LINER "FRANCE" WOULD SAIL FOR NEW YORK THE FOLLOWING DAY. HER OWNERS, THE FRENCH LINE, HAVE REACHED AGREEMENT WITH THE MARITIME UNIONS ON INCREASED PAY CLAIMS. THIS AGREEMENT CANCELS A JULY 14 STATEMENT FROM THE COMPANY POSTPONING THE "FRANCE'S" SAILING, PUTTING HER OUT OF COMMISSION WHILE SHIPBUILDERS GAVE HER A SCHEDULED DETAILED INSPECTION AFTER HER FIRST SIX MONTHS IN SERVICE.

A SERIES OF 24-HOUR STRIKES AMONG ALL SHIPS IN PORT IN FRANCE, HAS, IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS, DELAYED THE SAILINGS OF ABOUT 80 SHIPS IN LE HAVRE ALONE. THE SAILING OF "FRANCE" WAS TWICE DELAYED FOR 24-HOURS WHILE UNIONS AND OWNERS ARGUED. THE SEAMEN WERE DEMANDING AN 18-PER-CENT PAY INCREASE, AND THE OWNERS COUNTERED WITH AN OFFER OF 8-PER-CENT. THIS, AND FURTHER CONCESSIONS BY THE FRENCH LINE, WERE REJECTED, AND PLANS FOR THE LINER TO SAIL JULY 13 WERE CANCELLED.
