"The Wrath and Anger of the Indian Community is not directed at the White people of South Africa; it is directed against injustice", Dr GM Naicker, President of the Natal Indian Congress told a 10,000 strong meeting at the Currie's Fountain Sports Ground Durban.
"The Wrath and Anger of the Indian Community is not directed at the White people of South Africa; it is directed against injustice", Dr GM Naicker, President of the Natal Indian Congress told a 10,000 strong meeting at the Currie's Fountain Sports Ground Durban. Dr Naicker's speech (he was not able to attend in person as he is awaiting trial on a charge of treason) was read by Mr. SH Mayett.
The meeting, addressed by prominent local Indian and European leaders, was being asked to accept a resolution calling upon the Indian people of South Africa competition Parliament for the immediate de-proclamation of areas scheduled under the Group Areas Act.
Under the terms of this act, by which areas of Natal are scheduled for occupation by either whites or Indians, not both mixed, many thousands of Indians would be uprooted from their homes and compelled to seek dwellings in other parts of the country. Indians are protecting against this Act on three grounds; the immense human suffering involved, the magnitude of the economic loss to the community, and the impossible task of finding suitable accommodation for those displaced.
Large areas in and around Durban owned and occupied by Indians immediately become available for Group Area White ownership. In other areas like the beach and the Upper area, Indians have to leave within a year. In the Beach area alone more than 120 Indians, 120 coloureds, and 2,700 natives are affected.
Throughout Durban shops closed at 1pm in protest and many of the schoolchildren stayed away from schools. Indians at the protest meeting carried banners, and stood with bowed heads as prayers were said by three priests of the Muslim, Hindu, and Christian faiths.
One local correspondent reports that people were still streaming into the ground as the meeting began, while another reports that despite appeals from the platforms many left before the meeting ended.
