  • Description

November 10, nearly 7 million voters converged on thousands of polling stations scattered across the sprawling islands of the Philippine Republic to elect eight senators to their 24-member Upper House. The least elections to the Senate were held two years ago.

The result of the election showed a swing in favour of the Liberals. During the campaign, the Liberals - forming the main opposition together with the Progressives - criticised the present Nationalist Government for alleged corruption and claimed they would improve the standard of living if returned to power.

The Philippines have a population of 24 1/2 million and 104-member Congress.
