  • Description

Egypt's President Anwar Sadat has warned against attempts to partition Lebanon or undermine the Palestine resistance movement. He said Egypt would not stand by with arms folded.

The president was speaking to a conference of Arab Chambers of Industry and Agriculture in Alexandria on Wednesday (20 May).

He said he was "grieved and in great pain" over the developments in Lebanon and added that Egypt was prepared to help end the strife.

President Sadat pointed out that there were other forces intervening in the conflict and declared that Lebanese leaders themselves had to confront the situation courageously.

An Egyptian initiative earlier this year to end the fighting in Lebanon had failed. President Sadat had then called for a combined Arab force to establish a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Meanwhile in Lebanon there are no signs of an end to the fighting between Christians and Moslems.

Forty-five people were killed in Beirut streets while President Sadat was addressing the Alexandria conference.
