Background: The Second Assembly of the International Telecommunications satellite Organisation, INTELSAT, has bene taking place in Kenya.

SYNOPSIS: The Assembly, held at the Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi, was opened on Monday (27 September) by Kenyan Vive-President Daniel Arap Moi. The Vice-President was met on his arrival at the centre by Kenya's Minister for Power and Communications, Omolo Okero, who escorted ???im to the conference hall where the other delegates had already gathered for the opening session.

The Assembly was called to order by its Chairman, Santiago Astrain, who invited Mr. Moi to deliver the welcoming address. Although there were wide unconfirmed reports, circulating in Nairobi, that Taiwan was resigning from the Organisation to make way for China's membership, neither Mr. Moi nor Mr. Astrain made any reference to it. INTELSAT has 95 members, most of whom were represented at the Nairobi meeting. The organisation was set up as the controlling body for the international satellite telecommunications network which covers the globe with six satellites in geo-stationary orbit, 22,500 miles (36,000 kilometres) above the earth.
