Two student leaders were arrested finally in Djakarta on Tuesday (4 August), on the second day of protest demonstrations against alleged government corruption.

The students - from the West Java capital of Bandung - said army officers had asked them who were their leaders before making the arrests.

After the arrests, the other demonstrators continued waving placards denouncing what they called the "weak attitude" of Major-General Surgih Arto, the attorney-General, in dealing with corruption and graft. Other members of the "Bandung-on-the-move" group carried placards outside the Mining Ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture, although demonstrations are officially banned in Djakarta.

In a new move to stamp out corruption, President Suharto this week ordered all high-ranking Government officials and officers in the armed forces to submit inspection lists of their personal property in a new move to stamp out corruption.
