Background: Rusty Jordan and Roberta Salberg gobbled, munched, gulped and swallowed their way to a glorious victory in an event billed as the California Regional Intercollegiate Pancake Eating Contest. Mr. Jordan and Miss Salberg represented the University of Southern California they defeated a number of other student eaters on the USC team as well as a team from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Mayor Thomas Yorty of Los Angeles rang the starting bell, the college students waded in. An hour later, the only people left eating were the winners. Between them, they put away 167 pancakes. Nobody kept track of the total number of pancakes consumed, but it was evidently considerable.
One distraction was actress Mamie Van Doren who was on hand so cheer on the contestants, help out when the going got tough, and kiss the winner when it was all over.
The contest was held at a restaurant specializing in pancakes on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles on Shrove Tuesday (11 February). Pancaked are traditionally eaten on that date, the day before the beginning of the Lenten Season.
Miss Salberg and Mr. Jordan can now compete in similar contests on a national level if they can bring themselves to face another pancake.
