  • Description

MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN HAD TALKS WITH BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON AT DOWNING STREET TODAY (WEDNESDAY). BRITISH AND MALAYSIAN SPOKESMEN MAINTAINED A STRICT SILENCE ON ALL DETAILS OF THE TALKS.

IT IS BELIEVED THAT BRITAIN IS NOT LIKELY TO WITHDRAW ITS COMBAT TROOPS FROM THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE IN MALAYSIA OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, BUT THE FUTURE OF THE COMMONWEALTH BRIGADE AND ITS BRITISH CONTINGENT IS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE FIGURED IN THE TWO-HOUR TALKS AT DOWNING STREET. THE TWO LEADERS DEALT WITH THE FUTURE DEFENCE OF MALAYSIA AND BRITAIN'S INTENTIONS TO MAINTAIN AN EFFECTIVE MILITARY PRESENCE IN THE FAR EAST.

IT HAS ALREADY BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT THE 50,000 STRONG FORCES BRITAIN HAD IN SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA DURING INDONESIA'S CONFRONTATION WOULD BE CUT TO 30,000 BY NEXT APRIL.

WHEN HE ARRIVED YESTERDAY, THE TUNKU SAID IT WAS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAIN SOME BRITISH PRESENCE IN MALAYSIA AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA IN GENERAL TO DETER POSSIBLE COMMUNIST AGGRESSION. HE REITERATED HIS PROPOSAL FOR A MEETING OF BRITAIN, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA TO DISCUSS DEFENCE ARRANGEMENTS IN VIEW OF BRITAIN'S PLANNED REDUCTION.
