Background: EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE OF ETHIOPIA ARRIVED IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) FOR A SEVEN-DAY STATE VISIT. HE WAS WELCOMED AT THE AIRPORT BY PRIME MINISTER KENYATTA, AND MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD, THE GOVERNOR GENERAL OF KENYA.

AFTER INSPECTING A GUARD OF HONOUR AND MEETING MEMBERS OF THE KENYA GOVERNMENT AND THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, THE EMPEROR AND PRIME MINISTER KENYATTA WATCHED A DISPLAY OF TRIBAL DANCING ON THE AIRPORT TARMAC. ONE OVER ENTHUSIASTIC ETHIOPIAN PHOTOGRAPHER WAS RESTRAINED BY POLICE AS HE TRIED FOR A CLOSER "CLOSE-UP" OF HIS EMPEROR.

FROM THE AIRPORT, EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE AND PRIME MINISTER KENYATTA DROVE IN AN OPEN CAR AT THE HEAD OF A MILE-LONG PROCESSION OF CARS INTO NAIROBI. CROWDS LINED THE FLAG-BEDECKED STREETS TO WATCH THEM DRIVE TO THE STATE HOUSE - THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE OF COLONIAL DAYS - WHERE THE EMPEROR IS STAYING AS A GUEST OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

THIS IS THE FIRST STATE VISIT TO KENYA SINCE THE COUNTRY BECAME INDEPENDENT SIX MONTHS AGO, AND THE OCCASION WAS DECLARED A PUBLIC HOLIDAY. THE EMPEROR AND MR. KENYATTA ARE EXPECTED TO DISCUSS CLOSE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THEIR TWO COUNTRIES IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THEY BOTH HAVE BORDER DISPUTES WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURING SOMALIA.
