  • Description

A military parade was the highlight of the celebrations to mark the fourth anniversary of membership of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (2 December).

U.A.E. state president, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, took the salute and, in a speech on his behalf by one of his cabinet ministers, he said he looked back with satisfaction on four years of consolidating the U.A.E. He said he hoped it would be a starting point for a larger, and more comprehensive Federation of Gulf States.

The parade was watched by a large number of state officials, including members of the Supreme Federal Council, leaders of diplomatic missions and cabinet ministers.

Token regiments representing the State's air, sea and land forces took part in a march-past, while air pilots staged a fly-past. Groups representing different Government and civil institutions in the state also took part in a civil parade.

Abu Dhadi is the U.A.E's largest oil producer. When it joined the group four years ago its government disbanded and, in a cabinet reshuffle, some of the members became U.A.E. cabinet ministers.
