    MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, THE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE, HAS MADE A FIVE-DAY TOUR OF SENEGAL, ENDING LAST MONDAY (29 MARCH). HE ATTENDED A SERIES OF OFFICIAL CEREMONIES, AND IN A COMMUNIQUE SIGNED JOINTLY WITH THE SENEGALESE PRESIDENT, LEOPOLD SENGHOR, RE-AFFIRMED HIS CONDEMNATION OF APARTHEID AND ALL FORMS OF AGGRESSION AGAINST ANY COUNTRY IN AFRICA.

    SYNOPSIS: IN DAKAR LAST THURSDAY, THE HEAD OF STATE OF NIGERIA ARRIVED FOR AN OFFICIAL FIVE-DAY VISIT.....MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON.

    GENERAL GOWON WAS MET AT THE AIRPORT BY THE PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL, LEOPOLD SENGHOR. THE VISIT OF THE GENERAL WAS SEEN IN SENEGAL ABOVE ALL AS A STEP TOWARDS THE UNITY OF AFRICA. SENEGAL IS A FORMER FRENCH COLONY AND NIGERIA A FORMER BRITISH COLONY. THE MORE THE TWO SPHERES OF INFLUENCE APPROACH THE OTHER, THE FURTHER THE CAUSE OF AFRICAN UNITY IS TAKEN.

    IMMEDIATELY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL, THE GENERAL ATTENDED A MILITARY LAYING OF A WREATH AT THE CENOTAPH. HE WAS ACCOMPANIED THERE BY THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, M. AMADOU SALL AND THE CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE ARMED FORCES, GENERAL JEAN-ALFRED DIALLO.

    GENERAL GOWON GREETED THE VETERANS OF THE TWO WORLD WARS, AFTER LAYING THE WREATH HIMSELF.

    AT THE END OF THE VISIT GENERAL GOWON AND PRESIDENT SENGHOR SIGNED A JOINT COMMUNIQUE REAFFIRMING THEIR CONDEMNATION OF APARTHEID AND ALL FORMS OF AGGRESSION AGAINST ANY COUNTRY IN AFRICA. IT ALSO REAFFIRMED THE ADHERENCE OF SENEGAL AND NIGERIA TO THE PRINCIPLE OF NON-ALIGNMENT AND THEIR CONFIDENCE IN THE UNITED NATIONS TO PROMOTE PEACE AND SOCIAL PROGRESS IN THE WORLD.

    AFTER THE LAYING OF THE WREATH, THE NIGERIAN HEAD OF STATE AND HIS WIFE ATTENDED A RECEPTION, WITH PRESIDENT SENGHOR. THE HEADS OF THE DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS IN DAKAR WERE PRESENTED TO GENERAL GOWON; STILL ON THE SAME SAY, A GRAND RECEPTION WAS GIVEN BY THE PRESIDENT FOR HIS GUESTS.
