  • Description

The Duke of Edinburgh was filmed by Visnews June 12 laying the keel of Britain's first nuclear submarine, "Dreadnought," at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard of Vickers-Armstrongs.

Speaking at the ceremony the Duke said the occasion marked the beginning of a revolution for the Navy as a whole and for the submarine service in particular. The "Dreadnought" - which will have machinery similar to that of the latest submarines of the United States "Skipjack" class, - was partly the result of Anglo-U.S. inter-dependence, he said.

The new submarine will be able to travel at high speed under water for long periods, and as the Duke of Edinburgh pointed out, this offered her crew the doubtful pleasure of spending an entire 2-year commission below the surface.

The submarine has, in fact, no keel, and in its place a prefabricated circular section of the ship was lowered into place as the Duke of Edinburgh operated the starting witch of an electric winch.
