  • Description

ITALIAN AND BRITISH LEADERS TODAY (TUESDAY) DISCUSSED BRITAIN'S PROSPECTS OF ENTERING THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET IN THE LIGHT OF FRANCE'S LATEST STUMBLING-BLOCK. THE ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. ALDO MORO, ARRIVED IN BRITAIN THIS MORNING FOR TWO-DAY TALKS WITH BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON.

THE TWO PRIME MINISTERS SPENT THE WHOLE OF A 90-MINUTE MEETING TODAY DISCUSSING THE IMPLICATIONS OF FRANCE'S REFUSAL TO HEAR THE DETAILED BRITISH CASE FOR MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET AT THIS STAGE. BRITAIN HAD HOPED PRELIMINARY EXCHANGES COULD START NEXT MONTH.

THE ITALIAN MINISTERS - MR MORO IS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS FOREIGN MINISTER, MR AMINTORE FANFANI - ARE STRONGLY IN FAVOUR OF BRITISH MEMBERSHIP, AND ARE STILL NOT PESSIMISTIC ABOUT BRITAIN'S PROSPECTS OF ENTRY.

THE BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR GEORGE BROWN, WAS ON HAND AT 10 DOWNING STREET TO OUTLINE THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS, AND TO STRESS THAT BRITAIN WAS ONLY INTERESTED IN FULL MEMBERSHIP, AND NOT IN ANY FORM OF LESSER ASSOCIATE STATUS, SUCH AS WAS UNOFFICIALLY SUGGESTED BY FRANCE.

MR MORO WILL RETURN TO ITALY ON FRIDAY, AFTER A PRIVATE VISIT TO SCOTLAND.
