    RELIEF WORK IS CONTINUING AMONG THE VILLAGES DEVASTATED BY THE ERUPTION EARLIER THIS MONTH OF THE VILLARRICA VOLCANO IN SOUTHERN CHILE, 500 MILES (800 KM) SOUTH OF SANTIAGO. A UNITED STATES MERCY MISSION ARRIVED SOON AFTER THE FIRST CALL FOR AID.

    AT LEAST 25 PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO BE KILLED, BUT THE DEATH ROLL COULD BE MUCH HIGHER. RESCUE WORK BEGAN IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE ERUPTION, BUT WORK HAS BEEN HAMPERED BY BAD WEATHER. WHEN THE LAVA BEGAN TO POUR FROM THE CRATER IT MELTED A NEARBY GLACIER, SENDING AVALANCHES AND TONS OF MUD AND ROCKS CRASHING INTO THE VALLEY BELOW.

    GRADUALLY THE RESCUE TEAMS BEGAN THE DIFFICULT TASK OF HELPING THOSE WHO HAD ESCAPED THE FIRES AND THE FLOODING.

    BRIDGES AND ROADS WERE REBUILT AND AREAS CLEARED FOR SUPPLY PLANES TO LAND.

    MANY FAMILIES WERE ALMOST COMPLETELY WIPED OUT. AS SOON AS BODIES WERE RECOVERED THEY WERE BURIED. MEDICAL AID WAS GIVEN TO ALL THE SURVIVORS, INCLUDING VACCINATION AGAINST THE SPREAD OF DISEASE.

    FILM ALSO SHOWS A MEMORIAL SERVICE HELD ON THE SITE OF THE DEVASTATED VILLAGE OF CONARIPE. THIS VILLAGE WAS IN THE PATH OF AN AVALANCHE CAUSED BY THE ERUPTION. WITHIN TEN MINUTES LITTLE REMAINED STANDING.
