  • Description

STUDENTS RIOTED FOR FOUR HOURS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN TOKYO AT ONE OF THE CITY'S MAIN RAILWAY STATIONS. THEY WERE OPPOSING RAIL TRANSPORT OF UNITED STATES AMMUNITION AND JET FUEL TO U.S. MILITARY BASES, AND DEMONSTRATING AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR.

POLICE SAID YESTERDAY THAT 718 POLICEMEN WERE INJURED AND 149 STUDENTS WERE DETAINED IN THE RIOT.

ABOUT 4,000 MEMBERS OF THE MILITANT STUDENT BODY CALLED ZENGAKUREN STAGED THE DEMONSTRATION AT TOKYO'S SHINJUKU STATION, THE CITY'S NORTHERN RAILWAY TERMINUS. SOME RAIL SERVICES WERE DELAYED.

THE PROTEST WAS ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF AN AIRPORT DEMONSTRATION IN WHICH A STUDENT WAS KILLED LAST YEAR WHEN MILITANT STUDENTS TRIED TO STOP JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER EISAKU SATO FROM LEAVING TOKYO AIRPORT FOR A VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM.

YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATION BEGAN AS STUDENTS CONVERGED UPON THE RAILWAY STATION AFTER A SERIES OF RALLIES IN VARIOUS PARTS OF TOKYO. AT THE STATION, THE STUDENTS SAT ON THE TRACKS WHERE THEY SHOUTED PROTESTS AGAINST THE TRANSPORTATION OF U.S. AMMUNITION AND JET FUEL.

AT THE SAME TIME, ABOUT 2,500 STUDENTS SNAKE-DANCED IN THE STREETS OUTSIDE THE STATION.

THE POLICE POST AT THE EAST ENTRANCE TO THE STATION WAS REDUCED TO A SHAMBLES AS STUDENTS RAINED STONES ON IT.

IN ADDITION TO POLICE INJURIES YESTERDAY, ABOUT 20 BYSTANDERS, A NEW REPORTER AND SEVERAL STUDENTS WERE HURT, POLICE SAID.
