  • Description

The influence of the Western world in the U.S.S.R. has become apparent in Moscow with the opening of a new supermarket catering specifically for foreign visitors. The supermarket is the result of a two million (US) dollar (over 833-thousand pounds) deal with an Italian combine, to build thirteen such stores for Russians, not just foreigners, from Leningrad to Vladivostock.

Outside the supermarket cars of diplomats, correspondents and the occasional ambassador indicate the customers at the new store. Inside the use of grocery carts and a cash register instead of the Russian abacus, symbolise the Western influence.

Foreigners in Moscow with foreign money can buy spring strawberries, game birds and many scarce foods, even during recurrent shortages. Scotch whisky sells for a (US) dollar sixty five (12/6 sterling) and champagne from Soviet Georgia for about two (US) dollars (16/-sterling). Elsewhere, however, the contents may not be quite so lavish or as cheap for some time to come.

Those in a position to know say self service has increased turn-over. In the old foreigner's store there was separate queuing to buy in each department with customers having to pay each time to collect their purchase.
