  • Description

RON CLARKE, THE 28-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN MIDDLE DISTANCE STAR, PULVERISED THE WORLD 5000-METRES RECORD IN STOCKHOLM LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY) AND ON THE WAY CRACKED THE THREE MILES MARK.

CLARKE AVENGED HIS LOSS OF THE 5000-METRES RECORD IN AUCKLAND LAST NOVEMBER, BY CLOCKING 13 MINS 16.6 SECS., 7.6 SECONDS LESS THAN RECORD THEN.

AT THREE MILES, THE AUSTRALIAN WAS TIMED IN 12 MINS. 50.4 SECS, TWO SECONDS LESS THAN HIS OWN WORLD RECORD WHICH HE SET IN LONDON LAST JULY. THE PACKED CROWD IN STOCKHOLM'S OLYMPIC STADIUM SHOUTED ENCOURAGEMENT AS CLARKE LEFT THE REST OF THE FIELD FAR BEHIND.

HIS NEAREST RIVAL WAS LECH BOGUSZEWICZ OF POLAND. TONY COOK OF AUSTRALIA WAS THIRD.
