Background: Japanese boxer, Guts Ishimatsu, scored a major upset in Tokyo on Thursday night (11 April) by knocking out World Boxing Council light weight shampion, Rodolfo Gonzalez of Mexico.

Iehimatsu, rated number seven in the Boxing Council's list of contenders, knocked Gonzalez down for the second time in the eighth round of the scheduled 15 round title match, and the champion was counted out.

The 24 year old Japanese fighter knocked down the champion with hard lefts and rights to the body, sending the crowd of 7,000 at the Nihon University stadium into a frenzy.

It was Ishimatsu's third attempt at a world light weight title.

The result might have been very different. At the end of the seventh round, the referee and one judge scored the two fighters even with 32 points each. Another judge had Ishimatsu ahead by just two points.

The fight went ahead despite a nationwide transport strike, and spectators arrived on bicycles and in taxis.

SYNOPSIS: Japanese Boxer, Guts Ishimatsu, in the light shorts, scored a major upset over World Boxing Council, Rodolfo Gonzalez in Tokyo on Thursday night. Ishimatsu, aged twenty four, was rated seventh by the Boxing Council in the ratings for the title. But he kept pace with the twenty seven year old champion, trading punch for punch.

At the end of the seventh round, both fighters were showing signs of strain. In the eighth round, Ishimatsu moved in with hard lefts and rights to the body, and put Gonzalez on the mat for the first time. At this stage the scores were about even.

Referee Rozadilla began the count. Gonzalez struggled back to his feet, but he was badly shaken, and easy prey for the Japanese challenger.

Gonzalez got to his feet again, with the help of the referee. But Ishimatsu poured blows in again, and the fight was all over for the Mexican when the referee stopped the fight.

Ishimatsu had a record of twenty six victories before this fight. But he had failed in two previous attempts at a world lightweight title. The crowd of seven thousand greeted Ishimatsu's victory with frenzied cheering.
