Background: West Berlin authorities on Saturday (1 March) compiled with the first part of a series of demands from the kidnappers of the city's Opposition leader, Peter Lorenz, when they released two prisoners jailed after an illegal demonstration last November.

The move came after West Berlin police had traced the two cars involved in Herr Lorenz's abduction. The Christian Democrat leader was seized after his official car was rammed near his home on Thursday.

The kidnappers -- who call themselves the June 2nd Movement -- have demanded the release of six other jailed anarchists -- each with 20,000 Marks (about GBP3,300 sterling) -- in return for Herr Lorenz's safety. They have hinted that unless these demands are met then their captive will share the fate of West Berlin Judge Guenter Von Drenkmann, who was shot dead at his home last November.

The release of Ettore Canello and Guenter Jagdmann on Saturday -- both jailed after taking part in a protest following the prison death of the alleged Baader-Meinhof anarchist group member Holger Meins -- came after the West Berlin emergency committee dealing with the kidnapping had met for several hours on Friday night. They have yet to decide whether to comply with the kidnappers' other demands ... which include an "absolute armistice" and complete radio and television coverage during the release operation.

The West Berlin authorities have decided that Sunday's city elections will take place, despite Herr Lorenz's kidnapping.
