Background: Six Salvadorean soldiers implicated in the murder of four American women missionaries were taken to the civil tribunal court in the town of Zacatecoluca, 65 kilometres (40 miles) east of San Salvador on Wednesday (10 February). The four women, three Roman Catholic nuns and a lay-worker, were found dead on 2 December 1980 on a road between El Salvador's International Airport and the capital. They had been robbed and raped before being shot. The suspects, all national guardsmen, have been detained in barracks in San Salvador since last April, when one of them confessed rather than take a lie-detector test. All six were discharged from the National Guard last week in order to stand trial: Salvadorean law prevents guardsmen from being tried for murder. Two other suspects remain in detention. The Salvadorean authorities' lengthy inquiries have been helped by American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents. The proceedings are being held in Zacatecoluca because the crime took place in an area under its jurisdiction.
