    THE NAGARJUNASAGAR DAM IS 100 MILES FROM HYDERABAD, IN ANDHRA PRADESH. IT WAS A FIRST, HURRIED VISIT FOR THE INDIAN PRESIDENT.

    HE SPENT AN HOUR LOOKING OVER THE SITE, ACCOMPANIED BY THE PROJECT'S CHIEF ENGINEER.

    CLAIMED TO BE THE WORLD'S HIGHEST MASONRY DAM, ITS IMPROVED IRRIGATION FACILITIES WILL BECOME AVAILABLE TO 650,000 ACRES. THE RICE SURPLUS IN THE PROVINCE WILL BE INCREASED AS A RESULT TO MORE THAN A MILLION TONS, MUCH OF WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN OFFERED TO DEFICIT STATES.

    THE DAM LIES ACROSS THE RIVER KRISHNA. APART FROM IRRIGATIONAL USES, THE DAM WILL ALSO BE USED AS A SOURCE OF HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER.
