  • Description

THE AUSTRALIAN TENNIS PLAYER, BOB HEWITT, WHO IS NOW LIVING IN ITALY, AND HIS SOUTH AFRICAN PARTNER, FREW McMILLAN, WON THE MEN'S DOUBLES TITLE IN ROME YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BY DEFEATING THE AUSTRALIAN PAIR, BILL BOWREY AND OWEN DAVIDSON, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 9-7.

HEWITT AND McMILLAN HAVE NOW WON 36 SUCCESSIVE MATCHES SINCE BECOMING A TEAM IN SOUTH AFRICA SIX MONTHS AGO, AND YESTERDAY'S WAS THEIR EIGHTH TOURNAMENT WIN IN A ROW. HEWITT ANNOYED THE CROWD BY HIS COURT BEHAVIOURS, WHICH AT TIMES INCLUDED BOUNCING HIS RACQUET ON THE GROUND, CURSING AUDIBLY AND TAKING SWIPES AT THE NET.

DURING THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE MATCH, DAVIDSON AND BOWREY WERE UPSET AT DISPUTED LINE CALLS. THE DISPUTED CALLS CAME AT VITAL STAGES OF THE FOURTH AND FINAL SET, IN THE EIGHTH, 12TH, AND 15TH GAMES. BOWREY AND DAVIDSON WOULD HAVE GREATLY BENEFITED -- AND MAY EVEN HAVE WON -- IF THE CALLS HAD GONE THEIR WAY.

HEWITT SAID AFTERWARDS THAT IT WAS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE CALLS HAD COME AT SUCH IMPORTANT STAGES OF THE A MATCH. HE SAID: "YOU DON'T LIKE TO WIN THAT WAY. WE WERE FORTUNATE THE CALLS FAVOURED US." HEWITT AND McMILLAN WERE BOOED AND CHEERED AS THEY RECEIVED THEIR TROPHY.
