Background: President Jafaar El Nimeiry of the Sudan has given control of the country's two main publishing houses - which print the nation's only two daily newspapers - to the Sudanese Socialist Union, the state's sole political party.

The two publishing houses, El Ayam and El Sahafa, print daily newspapers under their own name. They were nationalised in 1970, but allowed to remain in the hands of their owners. The publishing houses also print all the country's other newspapers and magazines apart from those printed by government ministries.

The change in control follows an attack by President Nimeiry two months ago on Sudanese newspapers for 'not playing their part in reflecting Sudan's development policies'.

The editor of El Sahafa has already been replaced by a former government minister.
