  • Description

It is President Pompidou's second African tour since he took office. Early lat year he visited five West African countries, and on Wednesday (26 January) he left to make a two-day visit to neighbouring Chad before returning to Paris. The two-nation tour is part of President Pompidou's plan to visit as many of France's former African territories as possible before his current mandate expires in 1976.

This film, shot by Visnews Paris cameraman Pierre Rihouet, covers events on both days of the Niger tour -- the President's colourful welcome on Monday and his talks with President Hamani Diori at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.

SYNOPSIS: A rousing welcome awaited President Pompidou of France when he arrived in Niamey on Monday for a two-day visit to the former French colony of Niger. President Hamani Diori and his wife were at the airport to greet the French lead??? and Madame Pompidou.

It is the first visit to Niger by a Frer??? leader since Niger gained its independence in 1960. President pompidou was welcomed with full honours. President diori said that the links forged by history between France and Niger had not only stood the test of time -- they had gained new strength by adapting themselves to the changing needs of development. M. Pompidou said his visit would be a reply to the absurd charge of neo-colonialism and a change to state again the duty of industrial countries to help developing nations.

The two presidents drove to Niamey in an open car, and the six-mile (10km.) route to the capital was lined with thousands of cheering people, many dressed for the occasion in the flowing robes of tribal tradition. President Pompidou plans to visit all the former French African territories during his term of office; he visited five West African states last year.

On Tuesday, Monsieur Pompidou went to the Presidential Palace for talks with President Diori. The discussions dealt w??? the results of French aid to this large but backward country, twice as big as France but with a population of only four million. In particular they dealt with t??? possibility of increasing Niger's share in the important uranium mine at Arlit, in which the French Atomic Energy commission owns the largest holding. On Wednesday, President Pompidou left Niger to visit the neighbouring country of Chad before returning to Paris.
