SYNOPSIS: Barrow-in-Furness shipyards of Vickers Limited in the north of England welcomed representatives from the government of Brazil on Tuesday for the launching of a new submarine. The new warship is the first of two "Oberon" class diesel electric submarines ordered by the Brazilian government. Britain is also to build six frigates for Brazil under a contract estimated at GBP100,000,000.

After the blessing, the ship was named by Senora Maria Nunes, wife of the Brazilian Minister of the Navy. The Brazilian Ambassador in London was also present.

The ship was named Humaita--her name commemorates a naval action against Paraguay on the twenty first of February, 1868. It will be capable of more than 15 knots submerged. And will be armed with eight torpedo tubes....six mounted in the bow and two at the stern. Similar in most details to the successful British "Oberons", Humaita will be manned by seven officers and 56 men.

The Humaita will be followed in the building yards by a sister ship, the Tonelero, due to be launched next year.
