Background: Thousands of Chileans crowded into Santiago Cathedral and packed surrounding streets on Wednesday (5 March) to mourn the Chilean Defence Minister, General Oscar Bonilla, who had died in a helicopter crash two days earlier.
The four other members of the Military Junta attended the funeral service as did the General's widow and children. The Junta members carried the coffin in the procession after the funeral service.
The General was buried in a military cemetery in an area reserved for senior army officers.
On Friday (7 March) President Augusto Pinochet appointed Army Brigadier-General Herman Brady to the post of Defence Minister.
