More than ten thousand people lined the streets to watch the funeral procession of the 25-year-old waiter, Carmelo Jaconis. Waiters carrying wreaths and flowers followed the coffin on its way to the church.

    Earlier in the day a post mortem indicated that his death was caused by a. 635 calibre bullet. News reporters said that police were not issued with this type.

    This latest series of riots erupted recently when police broke up an unauthorised march staged to commemorate the death of a man killed a year ago during the city's bloody and unsuccessful battle to be named capital of the Calabria region. Police said Signor Jaconis was hit when demonstrators fired in the direction of police.

    Later, police encountered trouble at the central police station, when a crowd gathered. Hundreds of youths began hurling stones at the building, and police used tear gas and charged with batons drawn. They arrested 15 people, including one woman, during the battle in front of the police station. Later a police column encountered heavy resistance from demonstrators behind barricades in the Santa Caterina working-class district, and during the battle that followed a press cameraman was hit in the leg by a tear gas grenade.
