Background: Viet Cong sappers on Friday (18 April) attacked the massive Phu Lam strategic communications centre, only six miles (10 kms) from the centre of Saigon.

They blasted three gaps in barbed-wire perimeter fence but were unable to get into the radar and radio base.

A child was killed and nine civilians were wounded as rockets and satchel charges hit house and garages a few meters from the fence.

The Viet Cong sneaked through the northern boundary of Phu Lam about five hours after the nightly curfew began.

Half a dozen rockets burst inside the base, built by the Americans several years ago and now the centre of communications for military region four, the Mekong Delta area.

Guards in the base and helicopter gunships drove off the attackers before any more damage could be done.
