TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: CORVALAN: "He was invited to be present in the ceremony for signing a new contract treaty about the Panama Canal together with all the Presidents from Latin America. I don't know what they talked about. I do know that the invitation to Pinochet was very much criticised by public opinion in my country and by the public opinion of many countries. Indeed, by wide sectors in the United States. We do not have a sectarian or narrow outlook towards anyone. If Mr. Carter can help us, he's welcome to help us. But he can help us by ceasing to intervene. We do not expect a solution from Mr. Carter not from anyone. It will be the people of Chile itself who will resolve the problem."

On Monday night Mr. Corvalan attended a special reception in London to mark the fourth anniversary of the Chilean coup. The reception was organised by Chilean exiles and the Chile Solidarity Campaign Committee. A spokesman for the Committee said the reception was a gesture of thanks to British trade unionists, Members of Parliament, artists and writers who had supported their cause in Britain.
