  • Description

About 2,000 demonstrators shouting anti-American slogans faced American Vice-President Spiro Agnew when he made a refuelling stop in Bombay on Tuesday (July 6).

Mr. Agnew - who had flown in from Singapore - spent about an hour in a special lounge at the Santa Cruz airport while the demonstrators protested against alleged U.S. sympathy with the Pakistan government.

For security reasons, the airport terminal remained closed until the vice-President plane took for Kuwait to continue his 10-nation world tour.

SYNOPSIS: About 2,000 banner-waving demonstrators crowded outside Bombay's Santa Cruz airport to chant anti-American slogans as U.S. Vice-President Spiro Agnew made a refuelling stop on Tuesday.

But police kept a close watch on them and all people entering the airport were carefully vetted by security guards.

A tear as squad stood by as truck-loads of Indians - mostly drawn from the labour unions - rolled up outside the terminal building. And with the Vice-President safely installed inside a special airport lounge demonstrators were allowed to say their piece. They shouted their protests against continuing American arms aid to Pakistan and accused the U.S. government of helping Pakistan oppose the Bangla Desh movement.

The demonstrators - jointly sponsored by the Indian Communist and Socialist parties - maintained its momentum throughout Mr. Agnew' hour-long stop-over. But the airport terminal remained barred to visitors until the Vice-President's plane took off for Kuwait. Mr. Agnew is on a 10-nation world tour.
